What it takes to get ungated in restricted Amazon categories
Amazon restricts certain categories and subcategories. You cannot just list a product there — you need approval. The approval process varies by category, but the pattern is similar across most of them: prove you have a legitimate source, show invoices, and wait.
Sold as a brand: Amazon wants a letter of authorization from the brand owner, plus invoices showing you bought the product from the brand or an authorized distributor. The invoices must meet Amazon's requirements — they need your name and address, the supplier's name and address, quantities, and dates. Invoices that look handwritten or inconsistent usually get rejected.
Sold as a reseller: You need distribution agreements or invoices that trace back to the brand. Gray market sourcing rarely passes ungating. You need a clean paper trail.
Private label: For categories like Beauty and Grocery, Amazon may require additional documentation such as product images showing the manufacturer's barcode, letters from the manufacturer, or safety data sheets. It varies by subcategory.
What it costs
The approval itself is free, but the preparation can be expensive. If you need compliant invoices, you may need to buy a larger initial order than you planned. Some sellers use third-party ungating services that charge a fee to prepare the documentation. Those services range from a few hundred to over a thousand dollars per category. A few of them are legitimate; many are not. If someone guarantees approval, it is a scam.
The time cost
Ungating can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. If a rejected application requires resubmission, the clock resets. Plan for at least two weeks for the first attempt and another two if it bounces.
Should you bother
Unrestricted categories have more competition because the barrier is lower. Restricted categories have fewer sellers but higher costs to enter. For most sellers, the unrestricted path is faster and less risky. The exception is when you have a genuine supply advantage in a gated category — a factory connection, a brand authorization, or a relationship that competitors cannot match.
