Title, bullets, and the 250-byte backend limit

Amazon gives you a 200-character title and a 250-byte backend search term field. Both limits exist because a wall of keywords helps no one, and Amazon knows it. Sellers still try to cram every synonym in, and it backfires.

The title is weighted more than anything

Amazon leans on the title harder than bullets or description for ranking. That means the first few words matter most. Put the product and its main use up front: "Stainless Steel Water Bottle 32 oz Insulated." Don't open with "Premium High-Quality Best" — those words carry almost no search weight and waste characters a buyer actually searches.

If you go over 200 characters, Amazon can truncate the title in search and, in some cases, suppress the listing. You don't get a warning. You just stop ranking. Keep it under the limit and make it read like a sentence a human would click.

Backend search terms are not a dump

The 250-byte limit (bytes, not characters — accented and non-Latin characters eat more) is for words that don't fit naturally in the visible listing: alternate spellings, abbreviations, the Spanish term someone might search. It is not where you repeat "water bottle water bottle water bottle."

Don't put competitors' brand names in there. Amazon flags that, and it can get the listing removed. Don't put words that are already in your title and bullets — Amazon already indexes those. The backend field is for the leftovers, not the repeats.

Bullets sell, they don't rank

Bullets are where you convince the buyer, not the algorithm. Lead with the benefit, back it with a spec. "Keeps drinks cold 24 hours" beats "Cold 24h insulation technology premium." A buyer skims bullets in seconds; write for the skimmer.

The point

A clean, readable listing out-ranks a stuffed one more often than not, because Amazon's search has gotten good at ignoring keyword spam and rewarding listings that convert. Use the title for the words people search, the bullets for the reasons to buy, and the backend field for the few terms that didn't fit. Then let the sales do the ranking.
