Notes
  • Max CPC = (20% ÷ 100) × (10% ÷ 100) × $30.00 = $0.60.
  • Bid above this and your real ACOS comes in hotter than target, because you're paying more per click than your margin allows.
  • Amazon's bid+ by placement can push you 50–100% over your base bid on top placements and detail pages — if your base is already at the line, bid+ puts you well past it.

Max CPC Bid Calculator

Bidding on Amazon is a math problem dressed up as a guessing game. Most sellers set a bid by feel — "eh, $0.80 sounds right" — then watch the campaign and hope. The Max CPC formula removes the hope. Your highest safe bid is target ACOS times conversion rate times average order value, all divided appropriately.

The formula: max CPC = (target ACOS ÷ 100) × (conversion rate ÷ 100) × average order value. So if you'll accept a 20% ACOS, convert 10% of clicks to orders, and your AOV is $30, your max bid is 0.20 × 0.10 × 30 = $0.60. Bid above that and you've blown your ACOS target before a single sale happens.

Why conversion rate is the lever

Notice conversion rate sits in the middle. A product that converts 10% of clicks can support double the bid of one that converts 5%, everything else equal. That's why a weak listing with a great bid still loses — you're paying for clicks that don't close. Fix the listing and your safe bid climbs on its own.

I used to bid the same $1.20 across a whole catalog. The high-AOV items were fine; the low-AOV ones were bleeding. Running each through this formula showed me bids that should've been $0.35, not $1.20. The money I was burning on the losers paid for the winners many times over.

What happens above the line

Bid over your max CPC and the math inverts: you're now paying more per click than your target ACOS allows, so even at your normal conversion rate your real ACOS comes in hot. Amazon's bid+ by placement makes this worse — it can push you 50–100% above your base bid on top placements and detail pages, and if your base was already at the line, you're now well past it.

Use it per campaign

Run this for each product using its own AOV and conversion rate, not a store average. Auto and manual campaigns share the same math; only the control differs. Plug the result in as your base bid, leave headroom if you use bid+, and let the Break-Even ACOS number tell you the ceiling.
